Edwards’ natural typology were those who, like Thomas Hobbes, defended some form of metaphysical materialism. The whole of observable nature, according to these critics, involved no other objects but bodies, and no other causes except matter and motion. The claim that anything in nature represented spiritual things presupposed that there actually were such spiritual entities, and that they were distinct from and independent of those material things. But the facts of experience gave no evidence for
